Philosophy

“Scientific observation then has established that education is not what the teacher gives; education is a natural process spontaneously carried out by the human individual, and is acquired not by listening to words but by experiences upon the environment.”

---- Maria Montessori, Founder of the Montessori Method ----

What is the Montessori Philosophy of Education?

Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian teacher and physician, believed that children would develop and thrive at their own pace, if given the proper tools and support. After careful, scientific observations of children from around the world, Montessori developed her method of teaching with the potential of the child in mind. She believed in the basic idea that children must have freedom to explore their physical, intellectual and spiritual potential to become the person they will become. In a Montessori Method of education children achieve their full potential when the child, the teacher, and the environment come together in a harmonious way.

Respect for the Child

A strong and respectful relationship between the child and the teacher is essential for the child to feel supported and motivated to learn. In the Montessori classroom, this relationship is built on mutual respect, with the adult valuing the autonomy of the child and empowering them to learn through collaboration and experience.

Role of the Educator

Contrary to traditional methods of schooling, the Montessori educator is a facilitator of learning, and serves as an observer and guide of the child’s journey of learning through discovery. The teacher is responsible for cultivating a nurturing and supportive relationship, preparing the environment for the child, and modeling a love for lifelong learning and curiosity. Acting as a guide within the classroom, the teacher establishes a space for freedom within appropriate limits, provides room for error, and offers gentle correction and redirection when needed.
